Directions
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
In a separate bowl or measuring cup, combine the lukewarm milk and instant yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5 minutes to activate the yeast.
Add the yeast mixture and the egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until the dough starts to come together. You can use a wooden spoon, a stand mixer with a dough hook, or your hands.
Gradually add the softened butter to the dough and continue mixing until fully incorporated. Knead the dough for about 10-15 minutes, either by hand or using a stand mixer, until the dough is smooth, elastic, and slightly sticky.
Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Once the dough has risen, gently deflate it and transfer it onto a lightly floured work surface. Divide the dough into 5 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and cover with a clean towel. Allow the balls to rest for 15 minutes.
Prepare the filling of your choice. If using a sweet filling, make sure it's at room temperature and easy to spread. If using a savory filling, have it prepped and ready to use.
Roll out each dough ball into a long, thin oval shape, about 1/8-inch (3mm) thick. Spread a thin layer of the filling on top of the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Roll the dough up lengthwise, like a jelly roll, and pinch the seam to seal.
Using a sharp knife, slice the roll in half lengthwise, leaving about 1/2 inch (1 cm) uncut at one end. This will help you create the "wool roll" shape.
Twist the two halves together, with the cut sides facing up, to create a twisted rope-like appearance. Gently roll the twisted dough into a spiral shape, tucking the end underneath the roll. Repeat this process for the remaining dough balls.
Grease a 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pan or springform pan. Carefully arrange the wool rolls in the pan, placing one in the center and the remaining four around it.
Cover the pan with a clean kitchen towel and let the wool rolls rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until they are visibly puffy and have expanded to fill the pan.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
Prepare the egg wash by whisking together the egg yolk and milk. Gently brush the egg wash over the risen wool rolls, making sure to cover all the exposed dough.
Bake the Wool Roll Bread for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center of the bread comes out clean. If the bread is browning too quickly, cover it with aluminum foil during the last 10 minutes of baking to prevent over-browning.
Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 5 minutes. Then, carefully transfer the Wool Roll Bread onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Once cooled, you can either serve the bread as is or dust it with powdered sugar for a sweet touch. For savory bread, you can serve it with a side of marinara sauce, garlic butter, or your favorite dipping sauce.
To enjoy the Wool Roll Bread, simply pull apart the individual rolls and savor the deliciously soft, fluffy texture and your chosen filling.
